2006, the year of better singles play!
MATCH RECAPS Truro - The Last Hurdle (3 match recap) September 23, 2006 It's not the hurdles throughout the match that are difficult. The double-fault here, save a break point there, each challenge can be overcome with success. However, it's the last hurdle that defines a players commitment, fitness and desire to win. Carvajal/Lucas have been competing for 3 weeks now, with Carvajal having success with the last hurdle. Lucas is able to withstand the ups and downs during the match, overcoming small hurdles to make the matches. However, there is one more hurdle left for Lucas. September 9, Carvajal takes two sets 7-6, 6-4. Lucas plays well throughout, but the business end of the set is lost. September 16, Lucas maintains his composure to squeak out the first set tie-break, but loses the second set 4-6. Maintaining a consistent level of play is difficult. A flash of brilliance here, some poor play there. September 23, it's a battle that Lucas wants to win. A struggle that Carvajal has prepared for. Lucas is able to come out strong with break advantages in both sets. However, consistent defense and occasional winners allow Carvajal back into the set. Most service games are a challenge, but the last hurdle is cleared. Lucas' desire is there, but the fitness needs improvement. The strong beginning of each set is not able to be maintained. Carvajal is there on the cross-court shot, he's there down the line, he's at the net preventing the pass. Carvajal takes both sets 6-4, 6-4, winning both during the business end of the set. The hurdles keep coming. Carvajal keeps leaping. |
